About KiriSense

We think robots need a better sense of touch

KiriSense Ltd develops geometry-encoded tactile sensing technology for robotic manipulation. AI has transformed what robots can recognise, reason about and plan. But intelligence alone does not solve the physical interaction problem.

KiriSense was founded around tactile sensing technology developed by co-founder Kangsheng Bretherton-Liu. His approach to tactile sensing: rather than making the sensing material increasingly complex, use geometry to make the mechanical structure itself encode useful information.

KiriSense is an independent, founder-owned company that owns its core technology and patent portfolio. The company subsequently engaged the University of Sheffield as a research partner for laboratory testing, characterisation and validation of its technology.

University of Sheffield

Research collaboration

KiriSense works with University of Sheffield researchers, drawing on the University’s robotics expertise and laboratory facilities for proof-of-concept testing, characterisation and validation of the company’s sensing architecture, supported by UK innovation funding.

Henry Royce Institute

Industrial Collaboration Programme

The programme has supported the company’s current proof-of-concept work.

NVIDIA Inception

Technology ecosystem

KiriSense is a member of NVIDIA Inception, with access to its technical resources, training and startup ecosystem as it develops tactile sensing technology for robotics and embodied AI.

Technology and evidence

How KiriSense’s tactile sensing architecture works explains physical encoding and engineering objectives. The proof-of-concept report describes demonstrated normal and shear responses. Meet the company founders and Sheffield research collaborators.
